Эту страну с великим историческим прошлым по праву называют колыбелью европейской цивилизации. Однако традиции античного государства — лишь одна из сторон современной жизни Греции.
Древнейшая культура Греции отражает жизнь страны в течение многих эпох и сохраняет своеобразие традиций, складывавшихся со времен античности. Например, еще в Древней Греции возник обычай возводить дома с внутренним двориком. По внешнему облику, характеру застройки, типу домов и по укладу жизни провинциал ьные городки и села имеют много общего. Для тех и других характерна центральная площадь с водоемом, тут же расположены церковь, кофейни, небольшие лавочки. В большинстве гористых районов сохранились традиционные каменные двухэтажные постройки, в которых внизу держат скот, а наверху живут люди. Для равнинных районов типичны одноэтажные жилища.
Крупнейшие города Греции —Афины, Салоники, Патры, Волос и Ираклион. Афины — одновреме нно и самая старая, и одна из молодых столиц Европы. Жизнь началась здесь более 5 тысячелетий назад. После многовекового упадка Афины вновь возродились в XIX в., когда Греция освободилась от власти Османской империи. В центре этого крупного современного города с широкими проспектами и новыми зданиями сохранились замечательные памятники искусства прошлого, прежде всего классической Греции эпохи ее наивысшего расцвета — V в. до н. э.
Среди всех стран мира Греция отличается самой извилистой береговой линией. Ее берега, омываемые водами Эгейского, Критского, Ионического и Средиземного морей, гористы, резко расчленены, имеют множество заливов и полуостровов. Почти всю территорию страны занимают горы, самая высокая из которых — Олимп (2917 м). На востоке простираются обширные плодородные равнины — Фессалийская и Салоникская. На равнинах и в предгорьях — субтропический средиземноморский климат с мягкой влажной зимой и жарким сухим летом.
