Венгрия– государство в Центально-восточной Европе. Граничит со Словакией на севере, Украиной – на северном востоке, Румынией – на юго-востоке, Сербией и Хорватией – на юге, Словенией – на южном западе и Австрией – на западе. Население 10,114 миллионов (2001). Площадь 93 тысячи км2. Столица – Будапешт. Официальный язык – венгерский. Денежная единица – форинт.
Венгрия расположена в северной части Середнедунайского бассейна, замкнутого на западе Альпами, на севере, востоке и юго-востоке – Карпатами. Большая часть территории Венгрии занята равнинами и холмистыми участками. Венгрия целиком располагается в бассейне Дуная, длина которого составляет 420 км. На северном участке, где Дунай течет с запада на восток, эта река является пограничной.
Дунай делит Венгрию на две части. К востоку от него находится Большая Середнедунайска низменность – Альфельд, ограниченная на севере цепью невысоких гор. Высшая точка Венгрии – гора Кекеш (1.014 м). Правобережье Дуная занимает Дунантуль – возвышенность с горбами 150-200 м, которая пересекается полосой невысоких (400-700 м) средневенгерских гор (Задунайское среднегорье). На северном западе страны протягивается Малая Середнедунайска низменность (Кишальфельд), ограниченная Шопронскими и Кесегскими горами (предгорье Альп) высотой 500-800 м. Реки Венгрии принадлежат к водному бассейну Дуная. Крупнейшее озеро страны и всей Центральной Европы – Балатон (592 кв. км), которое венгры называют “Венгерским морем”. Глубина озера в среднем 3 м. Южный берег песчаный, глубина возрастает постепенно, что создает идеальные условия для купания. Другие озера, которые на ходятся в этой стране: Веленце (26 км2), Ферте (23 км2); водохранилище Кишкере. Климат Венгрии умеренно континентальный.
